Vicky Smith-Swain secures acquittal in historic rape trial
June 24, 2021
Vicky Smith-Swain from Exchange Chambers has secured an acquittal for her client in a rape trial.
The defendant and complainant had previously been in a relationship. The alleged event happened 6 years ago, with the complainant coming forward only 3 years ago. Proceedings were delayed due to Covid-19.
The case involved complex issues of disclosure involving family court documents. After a 4-day trial at Leeds Crown Court, the jury returned verdicts of Not Guilty.
The lay client had nothing but praise for Vicky’s conduct, providing the following testimonial:
“From our first meeting, Vicky came across as a highly skilled, down to earth, competent Barrister who is passionate about what she does. Throughout the various meetings we had, I had confidence in her ability to do her very best for my defence. I was encouraged to send through any information that I thought was relevant and Vicky took the time to go through each point and explained why it was either relevant and what other information was needed, or whether it was of no relevance at all! I appreciated her straight-talking advice, but also her encouragement when I needed it. Her approach in the courtroom was fantastic and resulted in a successful defence of my case. I highly recommend Vicky without reservation and I cannot thank her enough for going the extra mile.”
Vicky was instructed privately by Amber Solicitors, Hull. Vicky is a member of the criminal department at Exchange Chambers.
