Tim Wilkinson settles complex, high-value personal injury claim

Tim Wilkinson from Exchange Chambers, instructed by Sally Raeburn at Slater and Gordon, has successfully settled a complex, high-value personal injury claim for a seriously injured client.

Tim’s client was knocked off his motorbike in a road traffic accident.  The man, who is 63 years of age, worked full-time as a warehouse manager and enjoyed a very active lifestyle prior to the accident.

As a result of the accident, he suffered fractures to his cervical spine and a brachial plexus injury (BPI), which left him with a pseudo-paralytic right arm.

Although he returned to work after a period of absence, he subsequently developed chronic pain in his upper limb. The client underwent DREZ lesion surgery which reduced his pain but caused further loss of arm function, a compromise he was willing to accept.

Further medical examinations led to the diagnosis of a spinal cord injury caused by the severe nature of the avulsion injury. With that came a very small risk of the development of syringomyelia, a neurological disorder in which a fluid-filled cyst (syrinx) forms within the spinal cord.

The claim settled on a full and final basis for £1.5 million uplifted by the Defendant to “buy off” the risk of a syrinx.
