Richard Littler KC secures acquittal of man charged with manslaughter and S18 wounding with intent

December 6, 2024

Richard Littler KC from Exchange Chambers has secured the acquittal of a man charged with manslaughter and two counts of s18 wounding upon two further individuals arising out of the same incident.

38-year-old Ian Scott was found not guilty of murdering Liam Humphreys and attempting to murder his partner Rebecca Scott and another man, Tamas Jonas, following a trial in June. These acquittals could not be reported until now as the jury were unable to reach verdicts on the remaining counts.

This led to a retrial which has been ongoing at Liverpool Crown Court over the past three weeks. Jurors have now also cleared Scott of Liam Humphries’ manslaughter and charges of s18 and 20 wounding towards Ms Scott and Mr Jonas.

The jury accepted Richard Littler KC’s argument that the prosecution had not disproved the householder self-defence and Mr Scott in using a kitchen knife from his home only used less than grossly proportionate force given the circumstances of his home being invaded by the three of them.

Richard Littler KC was instructed by Richard Derby from Potter Derby Solicitors and led Sarah Holt from Harrington Street in the case.
