Terrorism

Angus has prosecuted numerous cases brought by the Counter Terrorism division of the Crown Prosecution Service. Those prosecutions have included offending involving the dissemination of terrorist material and cases involving attack planning including a plot to detonate an improvised explosive device at St James Hospital in Leeds.

Notable cases

R v F – Prosecuted (led by Jonathan Sandiford KC) a defendant charged with preparing an act(s) of terrorism. The defendant planned an attack against two targets, armed himself with knives and built an improvised explosive device which he then transported to a military base in North Yorkshire followed by St James Hospital in Leeds. The device was viable but detonation was avoided after a member of the public talked the defendant down prior to armed officers arriving on the scene.

R v Johnson  – Prosecuted (alone) a defendant charged with inciting racial hatred after filming asylum seekers in the aftermath of the riots.

R v Azizi & Others – Prosecuted (led by Denise Breen-Lawton KC) two defendants charged with disseminating Islamist propaganda.

R v C – Prosecuted (alone) a young man charged with possessing material contrary to section 58 of the Terrorism Act 2000.
