Kim Whittlestone from Exchange Chambers has secured a range of acquittals for her client in a historic sexual assault trial at Carlisle Crown Court.
The 73-year-old defendant was acquitted of 7 charges of sexual abuse between 1970 and 1975.
He pleaded guilty to one charge of indecent assault and was given an 18-month jail term, suspended for two years.
Passing sentence, Recorder Andrew Nuttall told the defendant he had shown “good sense” by admitting the indecent assault.
He concluded: “I do not consider that you are a risk to the public.
“I don’t think the public need protection from you.
“Your offence is serious enough to warrant immediate imprisonment even so many years after committing the offence.
“But I have decided that little good would be done by that so I have decided to impose a term of imprisonment but I will suspend it.”
Kim Whittlestone was instructed by Scott Duff and Co. Kim is a member of the criminal department at Exchange Chambers.
