Andrew Ward represents the Ministry of Justice in an Article 2 Jury Inquest

Andrew Ward from Exchange Chambers represented the Ministry of Justice on behalf of the Prison Service at a 5-day Article 2 jury inquest held in person before Mr. Darren Stewart OBE, Assistant Coroner for Surrey, at Surrey Coroner’s Court between 7th and 11th June 2021. The inquest related to the death of an inmate at H.M.P. Coldingley in August 2018 caused by NPS (New Psychoactive Substance) toxicity, known commonly as Spice toxicity.
The jury returned a short narrative conclusion that made no criticism of the Prison Service. The Coroner decided it was unnecessary to order a Regulation 28 report to prevent future deaths.
Andrew was instructed by Judith Sabel from the Government Legal Department.
